Communist patriarch Jyoti Basu Country's longest serving chief minister and communist patriarch Jyoti Basu passes away at a private hospital in Kolkata on Jan 17. He was 96. He died at 11.47 am. Basu is survived by his son Chandan Basu and granddaughters. The former West Bengal chief minister, who was the poster boy of parliamentary communism in India, was admitted to Salt Lake's AMRI Hospitals on January 1 after he complained of a chest congestion.
