Nine scares of 2011

Sunil Rajguru

India saw a wide variety of scares in 2011. A look at just nine of them...

1. Mullaperiyar Dam: This gravity dam was built for Madras Presidency in Travancore towards the end of the nineteenth century. The validity of the old agreement was discussed extensively after India got Independence.

Gujarat’s Morvi Dam failure led to a scare in Mullaperiyar in 1979. That led to efforts to strengthen the dam. The Supreme Court set up a committee in 2010. Then Dam999 was released and the floodgates opened. It was banned in Tamil Nadu, leading to an all-out scare that the dam would burst and a new low in relations between Kerala and TN.
