Oslo: A court in Norway convicted an Indian couple from Andhra Pradesh for alleged abuse of their son, on Tuesday.

The court sentenced the father Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni to 18 months in prison and mother Anupama to 15 months jail time.

Norway police have accused the software engineer and his wife of burning and hitting their seven-year-old son, Sai Sriram.

Reports say that the father had 'threatened' to return his son to India for wetting his pants in the school bus.

Prosecutors had termed the child abuse case as 'very serious', and had charged the couple with "gross or repeated maltreatment."

Meanwhile, in India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that the Ministry of External Affairs should take up the case. However, the Indian government has already indicated that it will not intervene in the legal process of that country. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said that the incident pertains to a private citizen and to Norway's local laws.

Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni works for TCS, and was sent to Oslo on a project, 18 months ago.
