Tribals in Odisha's Nawarangapur District thrashed a medical officer at a district level meeting over issues of corruption.
The incident took place in Pujariguda block of the district where an official meeting was held at the local community health centre yesterday.
A large number of tribals in the area had gathered at the premises of the community health centre to protest against the rampant corruption prevalent in the state.
Things went heated up when some officials came to reason with the protesting tribals and one of the medical officers was thrashed by the people gathered there.
Police arrived on the scene and soon took charge of the situation.
The district level officers, who were present at the meeting, promised swift action against the corruption cases once the people would register a formal complaint to the district authorities.
"Previously they had complained against the incharge in Pujariguda. But they never complained to the district authority. So today I found that they had lodged a complaint about a month back. We did not know what actions were being taken then. Once they come to the district authorities and lodge a complaint then we shall take the action which is required," said Birla Purohit, the additional district medical officer.
The people protested that the medical authorities are indulged in rampant corruption and the poor tribals have no access to proper medical facilities.
The protestors demanded that the guilty should be brought to book and new officials with clean records should be appointed in the district.
"We demand that all the doctors here who are indulging in corruption should be transferred immediately. All the staff who indulge in corruption should be changed immediately and new recruitments should be made here," said Gopal Pujari, a tribal.
The Nawarangapur district is one of the most backward districts of the state and is mostly inhabited by tribals.
It is a Maoist affected area and lacks in basic health and other facilities. (ANI)
