Chennai: More than 40 passengers were injured, two of them severely, when a public transport bus of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation fell off the city's Gemini flyover (a.k.a Anna flyover) on Wednesday afternoon, at around 2 pm.
The exact figures are still unclear as multiple sources, including the conductor and eye-witnesses, place the number of passengers on board the bus somewhere between 30 to 50.
The bus (M17) was en-route from Broadway to Vadapalani when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the down-slope of the flyover.
On the Anna flyover, the bus was taking a sharp left turn when it crashed into the side wall and fell down on the road below from a height of around 20 feet. The bus was found completely flipped over as a result of the fall.
Some TV channel reports claim the driver was talking on his mobile phone just before the accident occurred. Some passengers claimed the bus driver was over speeding, citing that as the reason why the accident happened. Police, however, are awaiting the accident report before making an official statement.
