Jammu, Nov 19 (IANS) President of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti Monay said her party had introduced some much−needed correctives into the political system of the state, ending the single−party monopoly.

Addressing a public meeting in Krimchi area of Udhampur district, about 75 km from Jammu, Mehbooba said: "For nearly four decades the National Conference (NC) had enjoyed unchallenged power, which had turned it into an arrogant and thoroughly corrupt agent of exploitation."

She said that the PDP ended this monopoly and promoted contest and competition in government formation, which was the essence of democracy.

The PDP was formed in 1999.

The PDP president said that her party with its "increasing appeal in all regions and a shining record of performance as a leading partner in the previous coalition government with the Congress had established itself as the single and best alternative to change the present corrupt and inefficient system of governance".

She told the gathering that the NC came to power on the plank of development, jobs to Class 8 pass people, free electricity for the poor, and Rs.50 reduction on the price of cooking gas cylinders but it has done everything contrary to those promises.

Mehbooba said the present government had taken away powers from many institutions, including village panchayats. She complimented the people of the area for electing capable village heads and assured them of full support for their empowerment.
