PM meets Gayoom, stresses on political dialogue in Maldives

New Delhi: Amid the continuing political flux in the Maldives, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday met its former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and underlined the need for all stakeholders in the island nation to take forward the political dialogue for peace and stability.

During the meeting here, the prime minister referred to the close ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Maldives and conveyed that India was committed to working with the government and people of Maldives for the economic development, progress and betterment of the country, said external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

Manmohan Singh stressed the need for all stakeholders in Maldives to take forward the process of political dialogue and to work together to resolve the current political situation.

He also emphasized the need and to maintain an environment of peace and stability in the country.

The prime minister underlined that India would continue to work towards further strengthening and expanding its multifaceted relationship with Maldives.

Gayoom, now the leader of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), who had ruled the Maldives for over three decades, lost out to Mohamed Nasheed in the first fair and free elections in 2008.

Nasheed, who had quit in February this year, had blamed Gayoom for orchestrating an alleged "coup," a charge vehemently denied by the latter.
