The security at all functional airports in Pakistan has been put on high alert to avert any possible terrorist attack during the month of Muharram.

The Interior Ministry issued its orders to the Airport Security Force (ASF) to effectively manage security of the airports.

Earlier on Wednesday, six bomb explosions ripped five cities of Pakistan killing at least 23 people. The attacks were militant and sectarian in nature, reports The Dawn.

According to Pakistani intelligence officials, extremist groups, led by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), have escalated their bombings and shootings of Shias to trigger violence that would pave the way for a Sunni theocracy in the country.

Ehsanullah Ehsan, spokesman of banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), said that the TTP was responsible for the blasts carried out a day earlier near Imambargahs in Rawalpindi and Karachi. (ANI)
