Kolkata: The prime accused in the Park Street rape case is hiding in Bangladesh, according a report quoting police sources in a leading English daily of Kolkata on Wednesday.
The Telegraph quoting unnamed sources reported that Kolkata Police have come to know that Kadir Khan, who was the prime accused in the rape of an Anglo Indian woman on a moving car in February this year after she was picked up from a night joint in the name of a lift, is hiding in Chittagong in Bangladesh.
The accused, who was engaged to a Tollywood actress, is keeping in touch with his family in Kolkata and has been using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) to connect with them, the report said.
The unnamed police sources told the daily that only political will can bring Kadir back to India in the absence of an extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh.
Notably, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar recently triggered a fresh controversy over the incident when she said the infamous Park Street rape case in West Bengal was not a 'rape case' but a 'misunderstanding between the lady and her client'.
"If you're referring to the Park Street rape, see that is a different case altogether that was not at all a rape case. It was a misunderstanding between the two parties involved between a lady and her client. This was not a rape," Dastidar told CNN-IBN, triggering an outrage.
Reacting to Dastidar's remarks, the victim told news channels: "They cannot change the fact that I was raped on that day."
"Don't use us to do politics," she said.
The West Bengal government and the police were under pressure with a number of rape cases being reported from across the state last year, the most infamous of them being the Park Street rape case since it happened right in the city's main entertainment zone and on a moving car.
The 37-year-old mother of two, belonging to the Anglo-Indian community, had said that she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint inside the moving car after she was given a lift in the vehicle from Park Street area in Kolkata on the Feb 5-6 night this year.
After the woman identified a wrong set of people as her tormentors owing to impersonation by the gang, the Mamata Banerjee government first called it a fabricated incident though a woman police official later cracked the case and several were arrested even as Kadir managed to escape.
