Parliament pays tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar

Both houses of Parliament today paid tribute to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, who died in San Diego, United States, this morning. He was 92.

Making a reference to him in the Rajya Sabha, its Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari said in the passing away of Pandit Ravi Shankar, the country has lost one of the most respected and versatile instrumental musicians of our times.

Ansari said: "His death is an irreparable loses to the world of music."

"Panditji was an iconic figure who had become a legend of music during his lifetime. His greatness was universally acknowledged. His name had become synonymous with Indian music. His departure has created a void, which may perhaps never ever be filled. However, his work is immortal and will continue to inspire and give pleasure to millions of his admirers throughout the world," he added.

In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar recalled the services rendered by the maestro to the world of music.

Members stood in silence for a while in both Houses to pay their respect to the departed soul.
