Washington: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck on Tuesday near Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, blocking roads, collapsing buildings and leaving bodies strewn in the streets.

The quake struck at 2153 GMT on Tuesday, some 15 km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince at a depth of 10 km. Two aftershocks registering 5.9 and 5.5 on the Richter scale followed within the hour, with more temblors later.
