President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee, who contested on the Congress ticket, on Saturday won the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency by-election in West Bengal.
Mukherjee, defeated Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)´s Muzaffar Hussain by 2,536 votes in the election.
According to reports, the Congress gained 3,32,919 votes while the CPI-M got 3,30,383 votes.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)´s Sudhangshu Biswas got 85,867 votes.
Pertinently, Mukherjee was contesting the seat left vacant by his father.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) did not pitch a candidate for the election.
About 60 percent of over 12 lakh voters cast their ballots in the by-election that took place on Wednesday.
Pranab Mukherjee had won from Jangipur in 2004 and in 2009.
Jangipur is also the first Lok Sabha seat that Pranab Mukherjee ever contested in his long political career which began at around 1969 at the centre.
