Kolkata, Mar 1 (IANS) Presidency University students took to the streets Friday to protest suspension of college union polls, saying the West Bengal government was interfering with the institution's autonomy.

"The university as per schedule went to the polls Friday morning but the elections were interrupted midway by the state government. According to the advice given by the government, we are not supposed to hold elections till the next six months because of the Garden Reach incident," said a protestor.

"However, Presidency University is autonomous, and it has its own set of rules and regulations. This is interfering with the autonomous status."

The government has deferred college union polls across the state for the next six months in the aftermath of the Garden Reach incident where a police officer was shot dead while trying to control clashing students in Harimohan Ghose College Feb 2.

The Presidency students, displaying placards and shouting slogans, also stopped university officials, including the registrar and the dean, from entering the college.

"They did not allow us to go inside. If they continue picketing, we will not go in. Higher education officials have so far said nothing on the protests," said Probir Dasgupta, the university registrar.
