He was accompanied by his wife Shuvra Mukherjee, Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, four members of Parliament Sitaram Yechury, Chandan Mmitra, Mukul Roy and Bhubaneswar Kalita, besides Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai.
He was received by Bangladesh President Zillur Rehman, senior leaders and officials of Bangladesh. He was also given a ceremonial reception at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Soon after his arrival in the Bangladesh capital, President Pranab headed for the National Martyr's Memorial at Savar and laid a wreath at the base of the monument.
The visiting Indian President is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Finance Minister Abul Maal A Muhith today. He is also expected to hold delegation level talks with the Bangladesh side.
President Mukherjee's meeting with Leader of Opposition Begum Khalia Zia has been declined at the last moment.
Adequate security has been made across Dhaka and other districts where the President Mukherjee will be visiting in the wake of ongoing protests by the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami.
Apart from the symbolism of his first overseas trip and the special rapport President Pranab Mukherjee shares with the Bangladesh establishment, he will also get a chance to visit his in-laws ancestral Bhadrabila village in Narail District for the first time since he took over as president.
The President will also visit Rabindranath Tagore's country home in Shilaidaha. By Ravi Khandelwal(ANI)
