President Mukherjee confers NCDC awards for cooperative excellence

President Pranab Mukherjee gave away the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) awards for cooperative excellence-2012 to 27 agricultural primary cooperatives from different states of the country at a glittering function held here on Saturday.

President Mukherjee, who congratulated the best performing societies selected from each state for conferment of NCDC biennial awards, observed that these awards would inspire other cooperative societies in the country to perform better in the days ahead.

He stated that the United Nations declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives to increase public awareness about cooperatives and to promote the formation and growth of the cooperatives.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries Sharad Pawar, who was present on the occasion, also congratulated the National Cooperative Development Corporation which is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, and stated that over the past years, several enabling steps have been taken to give the cooperative sector a boost, including the recent constitutional amendment making formation of cooperatives a fundamental right.

This year's recipients of National Level Awards are Dakhin Rampur Gaon Panchayat Samabay Samity Ltd., Distt. Kamrup, Assam under Cooperatively Least Developed States category; Mulukanoor Women's Cooperative Dairy Vishwandapuri, Distt. Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh under Cooperatively Under-developed States category; and Samarth Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd., Ankushnagar, Distt. Jalna, Maharashtra under Cooperatively Developed States category.

Ministers of State for Agriculture Charan Das Mahant, and Tariq Anwar were also present on the occasion along with a host of other dignitaries and cooperators.

National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) is a statutory corporation set up under an Act of Parliament in 1963 for developing the rural economy through cooperatives. These cooperative societies cover a wide range of activities such as handlooms, marketing, consumer goods, fisheries, credit and service, large sized multi-purpose cooperative societies (LAMPS), poultry, transportation, cold storage, dairy etc. 24 State Awards and 3 National Awards were given this year.
