London, Feb 14 (IANS) In a bid to stamp out people's habit of spitting in public, an 80 pounds (about $125) fine is all set to be slapped on anyone found guilty of the act in a London burough.
London's Waltham Forest Council says it is the first local authority to introduce the ruling as part of a crackdown on the disgusting practice, Daily Express reported.
Anyone caught spitting in the east London borough will be slapped with the fine by civil enforcement officers, who also give out penalties for urinating in public.
"It's horrible to witness and leaves an unsanitary mess on our pavements," said Councillor Clyde Loakes, deputy leader of Waltham Forest Council.
"Why people think it is acceptable to indulge in what must be the most anti-social of all behaviours is a mystery."
