The weather office said that isolated heavy rain was likely to occur over North Coastal Tamil Nadu and South TamilNadu besides Puducherry during the next two days.

According to weather observations at 8.30 am on Thursday,Rameswaram recorded a "heavy rainfall" of eight cms followed by Mayiladuthurai and Tarangambadi (both Nagapattinamdistrict) at 6 cm each.

Chennai and its suburban areas received good amount of rainfall, raising hopes among water managers of a good inflow to the three main reservoirs supplying drinking water to the city, located at Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Porur.

Sharp spells of rain on Wednesday, which continued late night in some parts of the city, left low-lying areas inundated.

Chennai Airport recorded one cm rain, the weather office said.

The city and its neighbourhood were likely to receive one or two spells of shower or thundershowers in some areas in the next two days, it added.

Weather office had last week announced that North-East monsoon, which brings the bulk of rainfall to Tamil Nadu, had set in after an extended hot and humid season.
