Welcoming the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev on Saturday urged the government to take swift decision on all mercy petitions involving terrorists and rapists.
"Though the government has taken the decision very late, but I welcome his hanging and demand that the government must take a final call regarding all the mercy petitions of the terrorists and rapists. Even I think that except any extra-ordinary case, the government should scrap the provision of mercy petitions," he said.
Ramdev, however, said that a decision to hang Afzal Guru should have been taken much earlier, and added that this move would have taught a tough lesson to the anti-national forces.
Afzal Guru was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004.
On 13th December 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons.
They included five Delhi Police personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) official, two Parliament watch and ward staff and a gardener.
Guru was arrested within hours after the attack from a bus in the national capital. (ANI)
