Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Tuesday took potshots at Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik over his statement that the Indian Government should provide security to actor Shah Rukh Khan, saying it would be better if the former bothers about the internal situation in his country and introspects about the treatment of minorities there.

Tewari said 'the test of a democracy is not how you treat your majority, the test of a democracy is how do you treat your minority'.

"And the UPA Government under the Indian Constitution has endeavoured to treat each citizen and each individual with the same respect, the same equanimity, which the Constitution entitles him to," said Tewari.

"In so far as the Interior Minister of Pakistan is concerned, he would be better served by bothering about the internal situation in Pakistan and really introspecting about the treatment of minorities in Pakistan and see as to what they can do as a state to improve the condition and plight of their own minority," he added.

Union Home Secretary R.K Singh earlier in the day said that India is quite capable of providing security to its own citizens.

Singh further asked Malik to look after the security of Pakistani citizens and not to worry about Shah Rukh Khan.

"We are capable of looking at the security of our own citizens. Let him (Rehman Malik) worry about his own," he said.

The Pakistan's Interior Minister has created a controversy after he batted for Shah Rukh Khan and requested the Indian Government to provide security to the actor.

Talking to reporters at a reception organized by Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal to mark the Republic Day, Malik said that Shah Rukh was born Indian and he would like to remain the same.

"He (Shah Rukh) is born Indian and he would like to remain Indian, but I will request the government of India (to) please provide him security. I would like to request all Indian brothers and sisters and all those who are talking in a negative way about Shah Rukh, they should know he is a movie star," said Malik.

"I am sure all those who are talking against him or are trying to threaten him, they will withdraw their threat with this hope that the stars are loved, the stars provide love and they are like a symbol of unity," he added. (ANI)
