Security has been beefed up at all the sensitive places including the national capital and Kumbh Mela in Allahabad as a precautionary measure since early morning on Saturday after the execution of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

A tight security vigil was put in place across the national capital, New Delhi, to ensure that no untoward incident takes place following the government decision to hang and bury Guru at the Tihar Central Jail here.

Similar precautionary measures have been taken to avoid any unpleasant incident and ensure safety of the pilgrims at Kumbh Mela in Allahabad.

"We have ordered high alert at each and every sensitive places. We are focusing much at the Kumbh Mela. Vehicles are being checked at three places before entering the Mela area. We have deployed dog squad at the city border and about 125 companies of police personnel in the Mela area," said Arun Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Law and Order.

The Army is also on high alert in Jammu and Kashmir and curfew has been imposed in all the ten districts of the Kashmir Valley.

According to media reports, sporadic protests were held in Sopore and Baramulla districts against the hanging of Afzal Guru, and at least two people have been injured in the protests.

Scores of personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the state police have been deployed in Srinagar and other sensitive parts of the valley.

Sensitive areas of the state have been sealed and mobile and Internet services have been suspended.

Guru was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004. (ANI)
