Shanghai schools to hire ex-athletes as coaches

Shanghai, Feb 3 (IANS) The Chinese business hub will hire 100 professional coaches and retired athletes as sports teachers in schools to tackle the growing menace of obesity and weak physical condition of students.

To improve the quality of physical education lessons, the Shanghai Sports Bureau will also improve the management of public sporting venues, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Government subsidies to sports gyms will increase this year to allow them to provide more free or low-cost hours to the people.

The bureau will take back rented-out sporting facilities and open them to the public at low prices or for free.
