Triggering a controversy, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde mentioned the names of three minor sisters, who were raped and murdered in Maharashtra's Bhandara district last month, while making a written statement on the issue in Parliament on Friday.
The names of the girls were expunged after India´s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded Shinde´s apology for identifying them in his statement.
"They are minor girls. That is why the names were expunged," Shinde told reporters.
Leader of Opposition in the upper house Arun Jaitley raised the issue after the Union Home Minister named the victims.
"The identity of the victim is never disclosed. But the Home Minister has disclosed the names of the victims in his statement. I ask the Home Minister to take back his statement," Jaitley said.
In Parliament Shinde said, "It appears that all three were subjected to sexual abuse before being murdered. The collective conscience of the House, I am sure, is jolted by this."
