Srinagar, Oct 13 (IANS) Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde visited a BSF post on the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border that divides India and Pakistan in Kashmir, and chaired a meeting of unified headquarters on the second day of his trip to the state Saturday.
"The home minister flew to Neeru post on the LoC in Gurez sector this morning. He interacted with troops of 113 BSF battalion manning the post," an official told IANS.
Shinde later co-chaired a meeting of the unified headquarters here with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Top brass of the army, paramilitary forces, police, central and state intelligence agencies attended meeting which at Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex along the Dal Lake.
The unified headquarters is the apex security grid in the state providing coordination and synergy to forces fighting militancy.
Besides reviewing the security situation in the state, Shinde also held detailed discussions about security being provided to village sarpanchs and panchs in the valley.
Militants since last year have killed five panchs and sarpanchs after issuing threats to these village representatives to quit.
Shinde will also take stock of Dal Lake's conservation efforts. The water body is dying a slow death due to encroachment, discharge of effluents and weed growth.
He will also visit the Hazratbal Shrine and attend a function at Delhi Public School here.
