Flamboyant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Amritsar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, was in for a major surprise today when on arriving 'home' after a big gap as he was busy first with Big Boss and then the comedy shows found few takers.
His own party virtually shunted him and no senior leaders of the party went to receive him at the airport where only few of his supporters welcomed him, sending clear signals of divided Punjab BJP.
Sidhu and his wife Dr. Navjot Kaur who is MLA and chief parliamentary secretary in the Punjab Government had recently been targeting their own party bosses and even the party's alliance partner in the government Shiromani Akal Dal (B).
She had even stated that the Badal Government lacked vision and was directionless. She has been sulking after her husband was ousted from the national executive of the party by new national BJP chief Rajnath Singh.
Sidhu, who has been elected from Amritsar thrice, had promised a 'moon' to the residents when he stated that he would make Amritsar roads like the 'cheeks of Priety Zinta'. He had declared that he would make Amritsar Paris, but the city is today crying even for the basic amenities.
None of his promised projects of development has seen the light of the day and he has been blaming his own SAD-BJP Government for the same.
The former cricketer had been absent from the constituency for the last over 10 months now. His critics have targeted him for that and even the posters were plastered about 'missing Sidhu' in the city and its surrounding areas by the opposition Congress recently. It was after this episode that Sidhu tried to repair the damage and came home, but found little support from the party or its alliance partner Sad (B).
Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi, BJP chief Kamal Sharma, Vice President Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, General Secretary Tarun Chugh, who were once his close associates, stayed away from him today.
Sidhu who was considered close to former BJP national head Nitin Gadkari had not been auguring well with firebrand BJP leader Laxami Kanta Chawla too and the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley who is considered his 'political Guru'. Sidhu had ignored the party and has not been taking part in any of the party's programs for the last over a year now.
On coming home, Sidhu was upset on seeing the empty chairs that greeted him at the circuit house where he had come to address the rally today. Talking to the media, he said he has a lot to speak but was waiting for the right opportunity to open his mouth.
When asked about his prolong absence from the constituency, Sidhu said he is an honest person and thus earns his livelihood.
"Our leaders' including Arun Jaitley is advocate and he works apart from politics and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal also runs his business. What is wrong if I work for my livelihood," he asked.
Sidhu said he would sacrifice his post for the betterment of the alliance if needed.
He, however, said that he would answer every question of the media at an appropriate time. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
