The DMK is the oldest of the Dravidian parties opposed to the governing AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.
The DMDK is the principal opposition party in the Tamil Nadu assembly – it has more MLAs than the DMK.
The MDMK and the PMK have weakened over the past five years.
In 2004 the DMK, PMK and MDMK together won all 40 Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
None of them are, however, expected to win significantly in the next election.
