New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Raw water in the national capital is insufficient to provide potable water to the entire population, the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) said Tuesday.

"The raw water available in Delhi at present is not sufficient to provide potable water to the whole population of Delhi as per prescribed norms," the CAG said in its annual audit report on Delhi, tabled in the Delhi assembly Tuesday.

The CAG noted the production of usable water at water treatment plants (WTP) and waste water recycling plants was also found to be below designed capacity.

"The drinking water was not being distributed equitably amongst the population due to lack of reliable data on population and water supplied to different areas," it said.

Also, metering of water at consumer end was not comprehensive due to which, less than 40 per cent of water produced was billed during last three years, it added.

The constitutional audit body also noted that proper measurement of water supplied to each division in the city and accountability for loss of water could not be fixed.
