Surprising species of 2007

An international committee of experts has recently published a list of the 10 most curious and surprising species found in 2007. The ten species are selected from about 17,000 odd animals and plants identified last year.

An electric ray, Electrolux addisoni, tops the list prepared by the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) at the University of Arizona (US). It was discovered on the east coast of South Africa. Experts say the name of the ray reflects “vigorous action of hoovering as a method of feeding.” It could compete with the well-known function of the hoover for hoovering, in its case, the ocean floor.
