New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, on Tuesday poked fun at Congress President Sonia Gandhi's claim that the UPA Government led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has brought about immense development in the country within a short period of time.
"Soniaji asked in a recent rally if India had seen any government that brought about so much development in such a short span of time... I did not understand who she was comparing herself too... We have been in power for six years," said Swaraj.
"The Congress has been in power for 50, and of those, over 30 years have been led by the Nehru-Gandhi family," she added.
Swaraj, who moved a motion for debate under Rule 184 in the Lok Sabha, asked Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to fight for the poor and not the rich.
"The Prime Minister makes bold statements - if we must go down, we will go down fighting. You must go down fighting Mr. Prime Minister but fight for the poor not the rich, for the country not the MNCs. Fight for your own and we will stand with you," she said.
Swaraj also told the Prime Minister that she was ready to accompany him at an international forum on the issue, saying it would be a unique example of a ruling leader and a leader of opposition unitedly pitching their voice for the welfare of the country.
The senior BJP leader further urged the government to rollback its decision of permitting FDI in multi-brand retail.
"Hum aapko harakar jeet darj nahi karna chahte hain, manakar jeet darj karana chahte hain," she said amid a thumping applause.
Swaraj further said the BJP was not totally against FDI, but it was against FDI in the retail sector.
