Kolkata, Jan 3 (IANS) A synergy between science and politics is necessary to motivate farmers, eminent agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan said here Thursday.

"Farmers' enthusiasm is very much conditioned by synergy between scientific skill, political will and farmer's toil," said Swaminathan during a lecture at the centenary session of the Indian Science Congress here.

Swaminathan, known as the father of the Indian green revolution, felt that the government policies influence farmer's returns.

"Scientists can deal with the productivity, deal with the ecology but economic policies of the government will determine whether the farmer will have enough return or not," pointed out the 1987 World Food Prize winner.

Swaminathan highlighted the lack of a "symphony approach" between various components such as technology, services and public policies.

"Today the symphony approach is largely missing. In other words, synergy between different components such as technology (which is the primer of change), services (which are necessary to apply the technology like seeds and so on), and public policies (control economics of crops) is missing," he said.
