The lay of the land
Spread across almost 115000 square kilometres (41.47%) of Andhra
Pradesh, the Telangana region encompasses the districts of Warangal, Adilabad, Khammam, Mahabubnagar (its biggest district), Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Medak and Hyderabad.
Nine of these ten districts - Hyderabad being the only exception -have been classified by the Government of India as backward.
Despite the Krishna and the Godavari, Andhra Pradesh's two major rivers, flowing through Telangana, the region remains poorly irrigated and has
seen many farmers being driven to suicide.
