New Delhi: Union Minister Shashi Tharoor was on Friday heckled by BJP women workers, who were protesting against lack of safety for women, at a function here to mark International Women's Day.
As Tharoor arrived at Talkatora stadium in his car to attend the function organised by Delhi Commission for Women, slogan shouting members of BJP's Mahila Morcha blocked his way and banged their hands on the vehicle.
Reacting to the incident, Tharoor's wife Sunanda Pushkar said, "Why are they making noise? What wrong has he done? It is told that they have damaged his car. We did not like this behaviour."
Tharoor was later seen sitting in the audience.
Over 200 BJP women activists on Friday stopped Tharoor's car as he was going to Talkatora stadium. The activists were protesting against the lack of safety for women.
"Around 12.20 p.m. Tharoor was going to attend the International Women's Day function at Talkatora stadium in central Delhi when his car was stopped by some women BJP Mahila Morcha activists," said a police officer.
The activists surrounded the car and shouted slogans. Policemen deployed near the stadium intervened and controlled the situation.
The protest continued for around 15 minutes, police said.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was the chief guest at the International Women's Day function in the stadium.
Police said they did not have any prior information that Tharoor was to visit the stadium.
