The Red Star over Nandigram

A house devastated by CPM cadres in Nandigram during the protests.

Veteran journalist Sujoy Dhar, who covered the unfolding of events at this cursed village first hand, explains how it all began, and examines the political and social implications.

Also caught in the crossfire was lensman Bijoy Chowdhury, who shot some of the most heart-rending pictures of violence and mayhem. Bijoy, a photographer and painter, was in Nandigram on November 10 to film a documentary on the farmers` struggle.

His frames of the day of the final offensive bear witness to one of the shameful chapters of our times, when neighbours turned into foes who could kill, maim and rape.
