The book that predicted it

Colonel Anil Athale

What if...?

Sometimes, life imitates art. The book Jihad: From Hindukush to Armageddon by Sunita Joshi-Ford falls into  that category.

Published in July 2008, a full six months before the 26/11 attack on Mumbai, it depicted a realistic picture of a sea-borne attack on Mumbai, except that the scenario painted in the book is much more devastating than the events of 26/11.  The author also talks of a nuclear attack in 2012,  echoing the current Doomsday predictions of  the world ending in that year.

But that`s not all. Elsewhere in the book,  the author also predicted Jihadis taking on Christian names -- a fact borne our by the recent happening in Chicago. One begins to wonder if the other predictions of author could also come true...

When I first read the book in September last year, I dismissed it out of hand. A sea-borne attack on Mumbai? The author must be out her mind, I thought.

But then came the 26/11 attack on Mumbai which had eerie echoes from the book, and I dusted it off  to re-read it.  And found it frighteningly prescient. The take over of Swat by Taliban: Suddenly the takeover of Pakistani state by the terrorists is no longer in the realm of fiction.

What if the terrorists had targeted our nuclear installations instead of Taj Hotel?  What if...?

Below is an extract from the book detailing  an attack on Mumbai in the aftermath of capture of Osama Bin Laden,  that leads to a revolution in Pakistan and Taliban take over. Given the depth and spread of anti-American feeling in Pakistan, it would be indeed a brave person who would rule this out.

As I came to the end of the book, I tended to agree with the author`s assertion on the front page  that while this is a work of fiction, it  is meant to raise a red flag and draw attention to the looming danger of the terrorists using Pakistani nuclear weapons. As an eminent strategist at Harvard University, Graham T. Allison has said, "It is not a question of whether but when the terrorists will use nuclear weapons."
