It all started with Leader of the Opposition L K Advani’s letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, suggesting that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee be honoured with Bharat Ratna. The letter triggered a chain reaction: The names of many eligible persons popped up for the highest civilian award in the country. They include the names of former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, BSP founder Kanshi Ram, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunandhi and many others. Those who have suggested the names of these eligible persons have placed sound reasons to second their stand. Let’s meet some of the ‘contenders’ for the coveted honour.
