Top 10 must-see Indian destinations in 2012

Lakshmi Sharath

The familiar and the exotic, the known and the unknown, the offbeat and the touristy – India as a destination is a temptation for every traveler. Be it heritage, beaches or wildlife, you are spoilt for choices here. As new destinations emerge on the tourist map , it is time to pack your bags and backpacks and explore in our own backyard. Here is our list of favourite destinations for 2012...

Gokarna, Karnataka

If you like a wave of mysticism, set amidst virgin beaches, ringed in by mountains, then Gokarna is the place for you.

Tales from Indian mythology lie entrenched in this small temple town that is drawing both beach bums and pilgrims. Dedicated to the Gods, Shiva and Ganesha, the temples here are very ancient and are located very close to the beach.

The Western Ghats overlook the Arabian Sea and you will often find trekkers discovering new paths along the coasts or higher up in the hills.

Must see: Om Beach, where the waves create a pattern of their own in the form of the mystical 'OM' symbol.

Head out to the other beaches as well - Kudle, Gokarna and Full Moon or Paradise and Half Moon Beaches.

You will just find shacks here though for accommodation.
