Top MCD official missing from action

New Delhi: Where is Vijender Gupta? That's what everyone in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is asking about its senior official who is now fighting the Lok Sabha polls. Gupta, the civic body's standing committee chairman, was given a ticket from the Chandni Chowk seat by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Since then he has not been seen in office, which means the BJP-led MCD's activities have come to a grinding halt.

Other side of battle

So much so that a weekly standing committee meeting - usually scheduled by him and where major decisions about project are taken - was cancelled at the last minute for no apparent reason. "The chairman decides, he is the boss. But he is missing from action," an MCD official said, adding that the chairman "had not come to his Town Hall office" since the announcement of his candidature March 19. Gupta is, however, quite visible to people in his Chandni Chowk constituency as he tries to woo voters.
