It was a big surprise for a businessman based in this Punjab city Saturday when he found packets of contraband mixed with a consignment of goods from New Delhi.

According to police, a local businessman contacted authorities after finding packets of heroin along with imported pomegranates.

District police chief Sukhchain Singh Gill told IANS: 'This consignment of pomegranate was sent by an Afghanistan-based trader via New Delhi. He may have sent a wrong bag that contained three-and-a-half kilograms of heroin.'

'We have identified the accused trader but we cannot disclose his identity right now as it can hamper our investigation. However, we have sent a police team to New Delhi to arrest him,' stated Gill.

Police sources said that the seized heroin is worth nearly Rs. 17.5 crore in the international market.

Ludhiana city, the commercial hub of Punjab, is around 100 km from state capital Chandigarh.
