Tripura polls: Voting ends; 85 pc turnout

Over 85 percent voters cast their ballots as polling to elect a new Assembly in Tripura ended peacefully on Thursday.

The north-eastern state is electing representatives to its 60-member Assembly.

Around 58 percent of total voters cast their ballots till 1 pm since voting started on Thursday morning.

The contest is between the Congress and the Left Front, which has been in power in the state for 20 years now.

The Left, led by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, will be eager to retain Tripura after the Front´s ouster from strongholds Kerala and West Bengal.



According to reports, Sarkar cast his vote at a booth in Ramnagar constituency.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has never won a seat in Tripura, has fielded 20 candidates this time.

A total of 249 candidates are in the fray, said reports.
