Washington: A U.S. Marine pleaded guilty in a court-martial for urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban extremists and then getting himself photographed with the corpses.
Staff Sergeant Edward W. Deptola has also been charged with lack of proper supervision of his juniors and failure to report the incident, reports the New York Daily News.
The incident came to light in July 2011 after a video emerged in YouTube showing four Marines, in full uniform, urinating on the bodies of three dead Afghans.
Deptola, along with another Marine, Staff Sergeant Joseph W. Chamblin based in Camp LeJeune, was charged on the basis of the video.
Condemning the behaviour of the accused Marines, the Marine Corps said the incident occured during a counterinsurgency operation in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province, in south Afghanistan.
Pleading guilty to the charges, 500 dollars were deducted from Chamblin's salary, and he was demoted to the rank of sergeant, under a deal with the military before his court-martial last month.
Three other Marines were given administrative punishments for their roles.
