The Union Cabinet on Wednesday referred the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill to a Group of Ministers.
The law deals with a woman's right to marital property in case of divorce.
Briefing media on the issue, Finance minsiter P. Chidambaram said different opinions had been expressed and the matter was referred to the GOM for a convergence of views.
The Ministry of Law and Justice had suggested that a woman be given a share in residential property of the husband, including inherited and inheritable premises, in case of a divorce.
Chidambaram said the Group of Ministers has been asked to look at one or two clauses of the Bill over the next few days.
Thereafter, the Bill will be sent back to the Cabinet for a fresh assessment. (ANI)
