Violence grips Manipur, five policemen suspended for firing

Five policemen have been suspended in connection firing in which a 29-year-old journalist was killed yesterday during a anti-rape protest called by Manipur Film Forum (MFF) against alleged sexual assault with a regional actress.

A three-member enquiry committee headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Suresh

Babu has been constituted to probe the incident and the panel would submit its report to the government for further action within a week.

Meanwhile, violence has gripped the state as protesters and security personnel clashed on Monday also in wake of the molestation of the actress.

Security was stepped up as army and police were seen patrolling the area as the protests had intensified in several parts of the city.

There was shutdown in the city after violence erupted and the protesters burnt vehicles, ransacked public property and pelted stones at the security forces.

A regional cinema actress, popularly known as Momoko, has alleged that she was molested by a cadre of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah ).

Locals took to streets in Imphal city on Friday demanding immediate arrest and strict punishment for Livingstone Anal, the accused.

Momoko alleged that Anal molested and assaulted her, while she was anchoring a music concert on December 19.

On Sunday a local journalist named Thangjam Nanao Singh was killed in the police firings that took place after protests turned violent.

The journalist's death triggered more violence among protesters and several portions of Imphal saw violent clashes between local protestors and police personnel. (ANI)
