Kolkata: West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan has criticized the state government's decision to transfer police commissioner R.K. Pachnanda following his handling of the case of a cop being killed in a political clash here on Tuesday.

“There may be several reasons why a police commissioner is removed. But if he is removed for what happened in the last few days, quite clearly there is something wrong and we need to look into it,” Narayanan said hours after the formal announcement on Thursday.

The state's chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was not happy to remove Pachnanda, but felt the police had not made arrests in the case on time. "Those who have been named in the FIR should have been arrested whichever part of the world they are in. Why were they not arrested? Because of that I had to take action," Mamata said.

However, reports said Mamata's detractors have alleged that Pachnanda was shunted because he wanted to arrest some members of her party in connection with the case.

On Thursday, Mamata visited the residence of sub-inspector Tapas Choudhury, a day after 12 people were arrested in connection to his murder.

Choudhury was killed while four other students were injured as clashes between supporters of Chhatra Parishad (CP) and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) broke out when leaders from both the sides were filing nomination papers for upcoming students’ union election.

TMCP and CP are the student wings of ruling Trinamool Congress and Congress respectively.

Mamata said law will take its own course in connection to the case.

"Law will take its own course. My one line is enough," she told reporters on Thursday.

She said Choudhury's wife will get Rs 15 lakh as insurance accident benefit and Rs 5 lakh from the state government.

Banerjee said an additional Rs 5 lakh will be given to the family from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

The Chief Minister said Choudhury's daughter Tanushree will get a job in a clerical post in the police department.

She said the government will also bear the expense for the education of his son.
