Supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party clashed with the police in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Saturday as they protested the death of a party activist allegedly due to police torture, reports said.

The police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd that gheraoed the Dhanekhali police station in Dhanekhali village of the district.

A TMC member, Kazi Nasiruddin, was detained by the police on Friday over a car parking issue, reports said.

Locals claimed when they went to Dhanekhali police station on Friday they saw Nasiruddin lying naked on the floor.

They alleged that the police had beaten the TMC member to death.

The police, however, denied the allegations and said Nasiruddin had fallen sick and was taken to a hospital.

The police said the doctors declared him brought dead.

The police also said Nasiruddin was driving his car in an inebriated state.

Meanwhile, Nasiruddin wife Manuja Begum has filed a First Information Report (FIR) and alleged that her husband was beaten to death by the police.
