The UPA government has been going through a difficult period in the last one year because of the scams and controversies which hit it.
The government was tainted by the 2G spectrum scam, the Commonwealth Games scandal, the Adarsh Housing Society row, the controversial ISRO-Devas deal and the appointment of P J Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner.
The Rs 1.76 lakh crore 2G spectrum issue has been called the biggest scam the country has ever seen while the Rs 76,000 crore CWG scam tarnished the image of the nation.
The government is trying to revive its image through the CBI probe into both scams. Many bigwigs, who were allegedly involved in the 2G scam, were arrested. They include former telecom minister A Raja and DMK chief M Karunanidhi`s daughter and Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi. Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi and others connected to the CWG scam are also behind the bars.
In the wake of the Adarsh scam, the Congress asked Ashok Chavan to quit as Maharashtra chief minister. He was replaced by Prithviraj Chavan.
Embarrassment for govt
The Supreme Court pulled up the government on three grounds - the appointment of the CVC, 2G scam and the black money issue.
The Winter Session of the Parliament was washed out because of the government-Opposition deadlock over a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G scam. The government had to yield to the Opposition demand to ensure the smooth functioning of the Parliament during the Budget Session.
The government had to kneel down on yet another occasion also. It had to accept the demand of Anna Hazare - who had been holding a fast against corruption - for the formation a panel to draft the Lokpal Bill.
Off late, the government faced another embarrassment in the form a most wanted fugitives list to Pakistan. Some of the `terrorists` in the list were found to be living in India, not in Pakistan.
While the government seems to be on track by taking corrective steps in all the scams and controversies, there are other issues which give it constant headache.
