New Delhi, Jan 23 (IANS) Noted actress and social activist Shabana Azmi Wednesday said she was "surprised" that despite the presence of many women in the television entertainment industry, they are reinforcing stereotypes of women.

Speaking at a conference of the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) here, Azmi said that as an artiste, she believes in the freedom of expression "but that right is not absolute... with freedom must come responsibility".

She said the council receives many complaints about the indecent portrayal of children and women.

"Self-regulation is most important," she said.

The BCCC is interacting with creative content makers on the kind of content they should avoid.

"I'm surprised that despite so many women in the entertainment industry, they are reinforcing the stereotypes of women," said Azmi.

To tackle indecent portrayal of women, the council is also tackling how "the camera lingers on the figure of a woman, becomes vicarious", she said.

"A five-second shot of a bikini-clad woman emerging from the water can be well-taken in a long shot or medium shot," she said, adding that the shot would become vicarious if the camera starts lingering on the body.

"The business is about images, and we have undertaken to tackle that."

The council held a meeting in Mumbai and another one in Chennai is planned to tackle the issue, the actress said.

"It is important we self-regulate without being hauled up by moral police there is need for a nuanced debate," she said.

The BCCC is an independent self-regulatory body for non-news channels set up by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation in consultation with the information and broadcasting ministry.
