Deepa Mehta caused sparks to fly with `Fire`, her movie on the lesbian relationship between two sisters-in-law. The movie incensed the Sangh Parivar and conservative Indians, but won critical approval and a long list of awards. Mehta, who lives in Canad, began her cinematic career writing scripts for children`s films. `1947` (`Earth` as it is called outside of the India) was the second film in Mehta`s trilogy of the elements, Fire, Earth and Water. Shooting for the third, `Water`, was stalled after vociferous protests by the Sangh Parviar, who said the film insulted Hinduism.
