London, Feb 8 (IANS) Women clergy will attends bishops' meetings of the Church of England for the first time.

Eight senior women clergy, such as deans and archdeacons, will take part as non-voting members of the House of Bishops, BBC reported Friday.

The report said the move was in response to the defeat of attempts to create women bishops.

A proposed legislation failed to win the backing of the Church's ruling body in November. The Church will, however, reconsider the issue this year.

The legislation needed to gain two-thirds majority support in each of the three houses - bishops, clergy and laity - but fell short by six votes in the last.
