Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday condemned the scuffle that its youth wing had with West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra last evening, and urged the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership to stop the ongoing violence channeled towards the Left Front in Mamata Banerjee-ruled state.
"On the pretext of this incident, widespread violence has been unleashed against the CPM and the left parties in West Bengal. The politburo strongly condemns the attacks on the CPI-M and the Left Party offices all across West Bengal," said Yechury.
" Many party offices have been destroyed and scores of party cadres and leaders have been injured in these attacks by TMC men. The politburo of the CPI-M demands the TMC leadership to immediately put a stop to these attacks," he added.
Another CPI-M leader Nilotpal Basu echoing similar sentiments lashed out at the TMC for using the heckling of Mitra as an excuse to attack the Communist Party and its leaders.
"We have, without any ifs and buts, criticized and we have disapproved the action of few protesters. But to use this as an excuse and the kind of wide-scale protest, I think hundreds of party offices have been attacked, ransacked, show the real complexion of Trinamool Congress," said Basu.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her state's Finance Minister Amit Mitra were heckled outside the Planning Commission office in the national capital by the SFI activists protesting a young comrade's death in Kolkata allegedly in police custody.
Dozens of protestors from the SFI waited for the TMC leaders outside the Planning Commission office and raised slogans against Banerjee when Banerjee came with Mitra and other ministers to meet the commission's Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Mitra, who was attacked by the protesters, has been in a hospital in Delhi since last night.
Banerjee, who later cancelled her scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh citing ill health, today accused the CPI-M of trying to tarnish the image of her party.
"After 35 years, there should have been a bloodbath. I am there that's why, total peaceful, and CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist), sometimes they use our flags also to create some drama and all. Don't trust them. One side they will kill the people and then they will say we condemn it. It is their double standard game always, they are hypocrites," Banerjee said.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy condemned the incident.
"Dr. Amit Mitra is still in the hospital, and depends on the medical report to be, medical bulletin to be issued by the authorities of the hospital, I cannot comment on that. But the incident that took place yesterday is condemnable by one and all," said Sekhar.
"This is unprecedented that in front of the office of Planning Commission belonged to the Government of India, such an incident has taken place and police remains silent onlookers. Till now, perhaps no arrest has been made," he added.
