So India’s grand old car the Hindustan Ambassador stopped production last month. While it won’t entirely be off the roads for quite some time, given that these cars last for a really long time, an era is coming to an end for the car industry.
The Amby (as it is affectionately called) has been around for more than 50 years and formed the backbone of government transportation and many taxi services. It received a death blow in 2011 when it failed to meet emission standards and faced a ban as an official taxi.
While the Morris Oxford (on which the Ambassador is based) went out in production in 1971, the model made it all the way to 2014. While the Amby has been admired for its sturdiness being called a “grand old lady”, it has also been derided and called a bullock cart fit for fields.
