Achala Sachdev: Bollywood's 'mother' dead

Achala Sachdev, who was well-known for playing roles of mother and grandmother in Hindi films, died at the age of 91 in Pune after suffering from various ailments for the past seven months.

According to reports, Sachdev was bed-ridden for the past seven months at Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC).

Her last rites will be held in Pune on Tuesday.

Her fans started posting their reactions on social -networking sites since the news of her demise broke on Monday afternoon.



Veteran journalist and writer Bhawana Somaaya posted on Facebook on Monday: "Sad news. Achala Sachdev the beautiful screen mom for whom Balraj Sahani sang in Waqt died peacefully in Pune writes a friend from the hospi."

Senior journalist Madhavan Narayanan tweeted:"Bollywood mother, shy matriarch. She´ll be remembered especially for Ai meri zohrajabeen- Achala Sachdev RIP."

One Arvin Chauhan tweeted: "Veteran actress Achala Sachdev passes away. I offer my deepest condolence."

"The "Zohra Jabeen" of Indian cinema passes away. RIP AchalaSachdev," one Vikrant Misra reacted.

"Bollywood actress Achala Sachdev passes away," tweeted one Mark Wright.

Born on May 3,1920, Sachdev worked for All India Radio, Lahore prior to Indian partition and then at Delhi All India Radio.

She made her film debut with ´Fashionable Wife´ in 1938 and acted in over 130 Hindi films in her career.

The actor gained immense popularity for playing roles of mother and grandmother in Hindi films.

She gained appreciations from her fans by playing some memorable roles in films like ´Karm´, ´Albela´,´Kashmir´, ´Foot Path´, ´Chhote Nawab´ and ´Himalaya Ki God Mein´.

However, her most memorable roles include playing actor Balraj Sahni´s wife in 1965 film ´Waqt´.

Sachdev charmed audience by portraying the Indian mother and grandmother in films like ´Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge´ and ´Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham´.

She also acted in Hrithik Roshan starrer ´Na Tum Jaano Na Hum´ in 2002.

The actress suffered from various health related problems in the last few months of her life.

She broke her left leg after a fall in her house nearly six months ago.

She also suffered from a brain infarction due to which she lost her vision and movements of upper and lower limbs.

However, her fans will always remember her for her captivating performances on the silver screen.
